Flamenco dancer, Isabel Rodríguez, and her connection to Andalusian flamenco
A journey defined by artistic skill, talent and love for flamenco.
Teatro Flamenco Málaga pays homage to one of the most outstanding artists in contemporary flamenco, Isabel Rodríguez. Powerful, sensitive and with a deep connection to flamenco tradition, Isabel has managed to forge her own path which has taken her to flamenco shows in Málaga and all over the world, championing flamenco as a universal language.
From Barcelona to the world: the first flamenco steps of Isabel Rodríguez
Born in Barcelona on 3rd February 1987, Isabel Rodríguez Jiménez grew up surrounded by flamenco. From an early age, she began her dance studies in the Instituto del Teatro in Barcelona, combining classic dance with flamenco training which she received from prestigious teachers such as La Tani and Paca García. This solid preparation allowed her to absorb both the classic techniques and the essence of pure flamenco.
Her passion for dance soon led her to take her first steps as a professional dancer in the Somorrostro Dance Company, directed by Javier Latorre. She began to forge a successful career with the show Andanzas, which meant she became well-known in Spain and in other countries.
Consolidation of her international career
At barely 18 years old, Isabel was already performing outside Spain. Her experience in the Tokyo Flamenco tablao marked the beginning of an international journey which later would lead her to perform in different flamenco shows in Barcelona, including El Carmen and Los Tarantos, two of the most influential flamenco venues in the city.
Her incorporation into María Pagés dance company, in 2006, consolidated her international career, allowing her to perform in some of the most prestigious flamenco theatres in the world. She has taken part in flamenco shows that have defined the evolution of contemporary flamenco, combining respect for flamenco tradition with innovative flamenco productions.
Versatile flamenco artist: from local tablaos to the grandest flamenco stages
Although her career has been linked to grand theatrical productions, Isabel has never neglected the essence of traditional flamenco. She has performed in historic tablaos such as Villa-Rosa in Madrid and El Arenal in Seville, keeping a close bond with the audience and the authenticity of live performances.
Her versatility has allowed her to alternate between the intimacy of the flamenco tablao and the grandeur of international theatres, showcasing her impeccable technique and artistic sensitivity and connecting with the very soul of flamenco in every performance.
Prizes and personal projects
Isabel Rodríguez has been honoured with some important prizes throughout her flamenco dancing career, such as the Vicente Escudero Prize in 2002, the Juana La Faraona in Hospitalet in 2004 and first prize in the Homage to Carmen Amaya festival in Barcelona (2010).
The same year she debuted her own flamenco show in Seville, Parte De Mí, in the Alameda de Hércules during the XVI Flamenco Bienal, one of the most prestigious international flamenco events. Later, together with José Antonio Jurado and the Fundación Casa Patas, she presented the flamenco show, Templanza, in the XIII European Cultural Festival in Argelia, thus taking flamenco to new audiences, affirming her maturity as an artist.
Isabel Rodríguez and her links to Andalusia
Although she was born in Barcelona, Isabel has proved she has a deep connection with Andalusian flamenco. Her performances in flamenco shows in Andalusia and her participation in the Flamenco Bienal in Seville, amongst other things, are proof of the respect and love she has for the authentic roots of flamenco.
In Andalusia, and especially Málaga, where flamenco breathes life into every corner, Isabel finds an audience that understands and shares her passion for flamenco.
