Typical Flamenco Expressions: What They Mean and How They’re Used

Anyone attending a flamenco show for the first time is often surprised to hear certain phrases shouted from the audience or exchanged between artists on stage. Far from being interruptions, they are an essential part of the flamenco ritual.

Why are these flamenco phrases said?

Flamenco has to be experienced in real time, without barriers between the stage and the audience. When someone shouts out “Olé!” or mutters “That’s the way!”, they’re actively participating in the performance. These phrases arise from emotion and from recognising talent or a moment of inspiration. They’re not rehearsed or planned, rather they appear spontaneously, in response to a heartfelt performance.

Many of these expressions go back generations. Some originated in the cafés cantantes of the 19th century, others in Andalusian courtyards or in family gatherings where flamenco has always been a way of life.

The most commonly heard phrases in the flamenco world

“Olé tú!”

Perhaps the best-known expression, used both within and beyond flamenco. It’s used to show admiration or excitement at a remarkable moment during flamenco singing, flamenco dancing or flamenco guitar playing.

“¡Eso es!” 

That’s the way! This is an affirmation that accompanies moments of precision or artistic connection. It might be heard when the dancer synchronises perfectly with the guitar or when the singer delivers a verse with particular emotion.

“¡Vamo’ allá!”

Let’s go! An invitation to dive in and give everything on stage. Sometimes an artist says it to encourage another, other times it comes from the audience.

“Tiene compás”

You’ve got the beat! This phrase refers to mastery of the rhythm, one of flamenco’s essential elements.

“Está sembrado” 

You’re on fire! You’re inspired! This is usually said of a flamenco artist who is especially inspired during a performance. The expression evokes the idea of being in one’s best creative moment, of having a brilliant night.
