Flamenco Styles: Los Cabales

A deep and emotional flamenco singing style at Teatro Flamenco Málaga

At Teatro Flamenco Málaga we explore one of the most unusual flamenco styles: the Cabales. Although less well-known than other flamenco styles, the cabales offer depth and emotion that is unique within the flamenco world.

The evolution of the cabales style of flamenco

The cabales are a type of seguiriyas, characterised by a change in the tone that is obvious when they are compared to traditional seguiriyas. This tonal change is what differentiates the cabales and gives them their distinctive beauty and complexity. In flamenco the term cabal not only reflects seriousness and knowledge in the performance, it also refers to the whole structure of the piece, highlighting its importance in flamenco culture.

The cabales are frequently debated in flamenco circles, where flamenco fans and experts meet together to exchange ideas and experiences. These sessions not only celebrate the art of flamenco singing, they also encourage an atmosphere of  continuous learning and reflection about the evolution and impact of flamenco styles.

Origins and creation of the cabales

There are many different theories about the origin of the cabales. One of the most accepted mentions El Fillo as their creator, a flamenco singer who combined American influences with the flamenco tradition of the seguiriyas. Although studies suggest that the cabales came from an attempt to blend the old style seguiriyas with the new musical tendencies of the 19th century, creating a form of transition which captures the best of both worlds.

Another important therapy suggests that María Borrico, an important flamenco singer at the time, created the cabales as a way to adapt to the musical changes that were arising at the time. Through the cabales, flamenco found a way to evolve and stay relevant over time.

Performing Cabales in flamenco shows

The cabales are one of the most complex flamenco styles, demanding an impeccable technique and a deep understanding of the rhythm and tones. Its performance requires exceptional precision to transmit the emotional intensity that characterises this style.

The execution of the cabales, especially as part of the seguiriyas, stands out for its drama and its sharp singing and is a close link between modern flamenco shows and the knowledge of ancient flamenco singing techniques. Throughout history many different styles and variations of the cables have been developed, each bringing its own unique contribution to this flamenco style.

The cabales have been transmitted by generations of artists, who through their creativity and technique have enriched this flamenco style with its own musical language, ensuring that its legacy will last throughout history.
