Flamenco dancer, Christian Lozano, performs Essence at Teatro Flamenco Málaga

An up-close and personal look at the career of flamenco dancer, Christian Lozano, one of the most prominent figures in flamenco, now performing at Teatro Flamenco Málaga.

Christian Lozano is one of the great names in Spanish dance and flamenco at the moment. His career, marked by his exceptional interpretative skill and his versatility, has made him one of the most relevant flamenco artists in the world today. Beginning to dance at a young age, Lozano has come a long way to become a reference in contemporary flamenco and it is exciting for us at Teatro Flamenco Málaga to have him form part of our cast of flamenco artists performing Essence, the most popular daily, live flamenco show in Málaga

The origins of a flamenco dance prodigy

At the age of seven, Christian Lozano began his dance studies, quickly standing out for his talent and ability to adapt to different styles. His first contact with dance was in various disciplines, but it was the different styles of flamenco that eventually captivated him completely. By the age of 16, he was already a professional flamenco dancer, securing his first contract with the Manuel Núñez Spanish Dance Company. This was just the beginning of a career that would take him to the best flamenco shows in Spain and further afield.

Flamenco success in Spain and Europe

After his time in Barcelona, where he was part of groups such as Color Danza, Increpación, and the José de la Vega Ballet, Lozano began touring European cities, establishing himself as a dancer with great international projection. In 1998, he completed his studies at the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona, graduating with honours, and moved to Madrid to join the Nuevo Ballet Español.

The National Ballet of Spain: Growth in his flamenco career

In 2000, Christian Lozano took an important step in his career by joining the National Ballet of Spain under the direction of Aída Gómez until she left the role in 2001. For the next seven years, Lozano stood out as the principal dancer at the National Ballet of Spain, performing some of the most important roles in the Spanish repertoire and Spanish dance. He participated in iconic works such as Medea by José Granero and Fuenteovejuna by Antonio Gades, where he put his own stamp on the roles of Jason and Frondoso, respectively. He also shone in other productions such as Elegía by José Antonio, Taranto by Antonio Canales, and El Loco by Javier Latorre.

Aída Gómez’s flamenco dance company

In 2007, Christian Lozano joined Aída Gómez once more performing as the principal dancer in her flamenco dance company. During this time, he continued to show off his immense talent, taking his performances to new levels of emotional depth and technical skill. His work in this company consolidated his position as one of the most important flamenco dancers on the flamenco scene, validating his ability to express the passion and duende, that inexplicable flamenco spirit, through his flamenco dance performances.

His international role as a flamenco dance teacher

In addition to his flamenco dancing career, Christian Lozano has also spent time teaching new generations of dancers. He has taught courses at Spanish flamenco dance conservatories and in a variety of different countries, including France, Italy, Thailand, and Korea. His dedication to flamenco is also reflected in his work at the Fundación Conservatorio Flamenco "Casa Patas" in Madrid, where he teaches flamenco dance, passing on his experience and knowledge to future artists.
