The choice of colours in flamenco costumes is never random. Each shade tells a story. While the flamenco singing (cante), the flamenco guitar-playing (toque) and the flamenco dancing (baile) are the heart of the show, colours serve as a visual language that enhances the message of arte jondo.

In many of our performances, artists carefully select tones according to the flamenco style being performed. This creates harmony between the emotional tone of the song and what is visually projected on stage.

White, red and black: the classic flamenco colours that move us

White, for example, symbolises purity and solemnity. It is often associated with introspective styles such as seguirilla or soleá. In our theatre, it’s common to see this colour accompanying moments of deep emotional intensity.

Red, on the other hand, stands for strength, passion and character. In lively styles like the tango flamenco or bulería, it becomes the star of the show. This colour captures attention and heightens the impact of movement.

Black represents elegance, but also mourning. It is frequent in more dramatic styles. Far from being a neutral tone, in flamenco it holds great expressive power on stage.

Complementary colours and their emotional impact
