Rocio López - La Boterita

One of Teatro Flamenco Málaga’s singing stars

Rocio López’s beginnings as a flamenco singer

Teatro Flamenco Málaga is proud to introduce one of our spectacular flamenco singers, Rocío López, La Boterita, who can be seen regularly performing a variety of flamenco styles at our daily, live, flamenco show in Málaga, Esencia. Born in Almogía, Málaga, Rocío López, La Boterita, began her musical journey when she started taking singing classes in the year 2000 while she was simultaneously taking dance and acting classes. Her advanced singing classes continued until 2005  the year in which she discovered her true vocation: flamenco. Rocio began to study flamenco singing in the different flamenco shows in Málaga, organised by flamenco associations, under the watchful eye of Virgina Gámez. From this moment Rocio began to work with a variety of flamenco companies, accompanying the dancers, known as cante para atrás - backing singing - while singing solos, known as cante palante, in many different flamenco associations in Málaga.

In 2010 she received the Triana Soleá Prize, earning herself a grant to study at the Cristina Heeren Flamenco Foundation. Thanks to her talent and previous acting and dancing studies, in 2011 she joined the group Induoteatro to perform the show, Medea, a flamenco theatre fusion. That same year, she moved to Japan where she continued to perform with other flamenco singers. Her artistic name came from this time in Japan, given to her by her colleagues and despite the fact that she disliked it, by the time she returned to Spain her stage name was well-known by everyone in the flamenco world. On her return to Spain in 2014, she reached the semi-finals of the Union Competition in Murcia. Following her experience in Japan, she continued touring around the world, working in different countries such as Germany, Ecuador, Mexico, China and Singapore, amongst others.

Once re-established in Spain she returned to studying at the Cristina Heeren Flamenco Foundation and continued performing in a variety of peñas, flamenco associations, and festivals across Andalucia.

La Boterita’s flamenco shows

Her first, and most important project, was the presentation of her album, known as La Boterita, in honour of her stage name which received critical acclaim. She composed the songs by jotting the lyrics down in a notebook, which she is too shy to show, whenever they occurred to her. From this notebook came pieces of music such as Sketch Me Your Voice or My Awakenings. Sketch Me Your Voice breaks the flamenco frontier, blending other musical styles, such as R&B, jazz, pop and flamenco, to reach the heart of different audiences.

La Boterita aims to break down barriers through her music, transmitting universal, contemporary themes. Her first solo work was the EP, Waiting For You, which had as its central theme love in all its states.

Polo A La Gloria is Rocio’s homage to one of the oldest and most traditional flamenco styles: the polo. Her most recent project, released around September of 2023, the lyrics are inspired by a poem by Gloria Fuertes, in which, despite being imprisoned in a society that rejects her, her beliefs, her ideals and her truth set her free. In this composition, La Boterita aims to express the importance of respecting and valuing ourselves just as we respect others.
