What are Peteneras?

Peteneras arise as one of the most enigmatic and captivating flamenco styles. This artistic expression, deep-rooted in flamenco tradition, is distinguished for its rich history, its mysterious legends and traditions. Over the years, Peteneras has been a lighthouse of melancholy and emotion, attracting generations of flamenco lovers with its depth, capable of evoking emotions and transporting listeners to a world full of passion and sentiment. Its distinctive sound and singular ability to transmit the art of flamenco has converted it into a fundamental pillar of cultural flamenco heritage, leaving a permanent print in the history of Spanish art and music.

Peteneras is a flamenco style characterised by having an octosyllabic, four-line verse that, when sung, usually becomes six lines as one line is repeated and another added at the end. Regulated by a 6/8 or 3/4 rhythm, the Peteneras beat accentuates the following 1-2-3 1-2-3 1-2 1-2 1-2.

Origins and evolution of Peteneras

Peteneras, deep-rooted in flamenco, have long been the object of debate and study amongst the experts, because some believe that the origins are to be found in Spain, while others link them to Veracruz in Mexico. The most popular theory is that the name Petenera comes from the 18th century flamenco singer La Petenera from Paterna de la Rivera. This historical connection, together with sarabande dance influences and Sephardi references in the lyrics, has enriched the Petenera with a unique cultural diversity.

Over the years, Peteneras have evolved, adapting themselves to new influences and styles. Its flexibility and capacity to blend itself with other forms of music and dance have contributed to its longevity and popularity in the flamenco world.

The popular phrase, “Go Peteneras style”

The popular expression, “go Peteneras style” is a reflection of the enigma and mystery associated with Peteneras. This colloquial phrase is used to describe someone who gets distracted from the principal theme of a conversation, usually looking to change topic or to avoid a complicated subject. This linguistic connection between Peteneras and evasion reinforces its reputation for being a mysterious and enigmatic style of flamenco.

Peteneras Dance

The Peteneras dance is an artistic manifestation that accompanies and complements the Peteneras music. Made popular in many flamenco dancing schools, this style of flamenco dance has adapted and evolved from the old Peteneras into the most modern style, each style of Peteneras dance has its own characteristics and techniques, allowing the dancers toi express a wide range of emotions and feelings.

The dance steps of Peteneras dance are executed with elegance and passion, accompanied by clapping, castanets or mantones, creating a visual and auditory experience that captures the audience’s attention, transmitting the true essence of flamenco.

Mystery and superstition surrounding the Peteneras.

Peteneras are wrapped in an aura of mystery and superstition. Some say that Peteneras bring bad luck to those who perform them, a belief originating in the 1940s. In spite of these superstitions, the Peteneras have resisted the passage of time, becoming one of the most loved and respected styles of flamenco.

This superstition, although it might seem a mere myth, has influenced the way in which Peteneras are performed and perceived, adding an additional layer of depth and mystery to this musical genre.

We are totally aware of the importance of preserving this rich tradition of Peteneras and for that we have organised a variety of events and initiatives in the Teatro Flamenco Málaga, to avoid this emblematic flamenco style being forgotten.
