Carmen Amaya was born in the gypsy neighbourhood of Somorrostro in Barcelona on 2nd November 1913 in the bosom of a humble, gypsy family, firmly rooted in the flamenco tradition. From an early age, Carmenn showed an innate talent for flamenco dance, charming everyone around her with her graceful movements and passionate expression. 


Carmen’s childhood was full of music and dance, fundamental elements of family and community life. From when she was a little girl, Carmen absorbed the rhythms and melodies of flamenco, learning the dance steps and traditional rhythms of her gypsy culture. Although her family had economic difficulties, the love of flamenco was a constant at home and Carmen found dance was a way to express her deepest and most authentic emotions.
