Childhood and origins of Manolo Caracol: the path to glory

Manuel Ortega Juárez, also known as Manolo Caracol, was born on 9th July in 1909 in the historic neighbourhood of Triana in Seville. His childhood was full of the rich folklore and tradition of flamenco, as he came from a gypsy family with a strong connection to flamenco. His parents Juan Ortega, “El Planeta'' and Pastora Juárez were renowned flamenco singers in their community and for that reason, from a very young age, Manolo was immersed in the world of flamenco singing.

From a young age, Manolo showed an exceptional talent for flamenco singing. He learned the songs and traditional rhythms listening to his parents and to other local artists in flamenco parties and family occasions that filled their home. As well as absorbing the music, he also learned about the gypsy culture and traditions that influenced flamenco.

As he grew up, Manolo began to stand out as a promising young flamenco star. Accompanied by guitar, he began to perform in the tablaos flamencos in Seville, where his powerful and emotive voice captivated all those who heard him sing. In spite of his youth, Manolo showed an artistic maturity and an emotional depth tha surprised even the most experienced flamenco artists.

It was during these formative years that Manolo acquired the nickname Caracol, which finally became his artistic name. It’s said that he received this nickname because of the way he sang with a voice that rose and fell like the sound of a snail in the sea. This nickname became part of his artistic identity and would help to consolidate his place in the flamenco world.

Collaborations and artistic legacy of Manolo Caracol

Throughout his career, Manolo Caracol collaborated with some of the most well-known flamenco artists of his time, as well as musicians from other musical genres. HIs ability to adapt and blend styles allowed him to explore new dimensions of flamenco, expanding his reach and influence in the world of music.

Amongst his most memorable collaborations are those done with his sister, the legendary singer Pastora Imperio, with whom he shared a stage on a number of occasions, creating magic moments that engraved in the collective flamenco memory. He also collaborated with the guitarist Melchor de Marchena, with whom he established a unique musical connection which crossed the barriers of time and space.

Personal life and his last years: Goodbye to a legend

Off stage, the life of Manolo Caracol was marked with a series of personal ups and downs which reflected the complexity of his personality and his passionate temperament. His relationship with the equally famous, Lola Flores, was one of the central points of his personal life, capturing the attention of the public and press on numerous occasions. Although  this relationship was turbulent and full of ups and downs, the connection between both artists was undeniable and his love of flamenco kept them together for years. 

As he grew old, Manolo Caracol continued to perform and record albums, although his health began to deteriorate. Tragically, Manolo Caracol died on 24th February 1973, leaving behind him a void in the flamenco world, impossible to fill. However, his legacy continues as a reminder of the greatness and eternity of his unique and unrivalled voice.
